As parents, we all want the best for our children's health and development. Vision plays a critical role in how children learn and interact with the world around them. Yet, many vision problems go undetected because children don't always know how to articulate what they're experiencing.
Here are five signs that your child may need an eye exam:
1. Frequent Squinting or Eye Rubbing
If you notice your child squinting to see the board at school or rubbing their eyes frequently, it may indicate uncorrected refractive error. This is one of the most common signs that your child is struggling to see clearly.
2. Sitting Too Close to Screens
Children who consistently sit very close to the television or hold tablets and books very close to their faces may be attempting to compensate for nearsightedness (myopia).
3. Complaints of Headaches
Frequent headaches, especially after reading or screen time, can be a sign of eye strain from undiagnosed vision problems.
4. Short Attention Span
While many factors can affect a child's attention span, difficulty seeing clearly can cause a child to lose focus or avoid tasks that require sustained visual effort, such as reading.
5. Covering One Eye or Tilting the Head
If your child often covers one eye or tilts their head to one side when looking at something, this may indicate amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye misalignment).
At Toptics Eye Clinic, our pediatric vision specialists use gentle, child-friendly techniques to assess your child's vision and eye health. We recommend that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age, again at age 3, and before starting school. Early detection and treatment of vision problems can make a significant difference in your child's academic performance and quality of life.
